We've arranged this section in a question-and-answer format to make it easy to find the information you're looking for.

What is an internship?

An internship is a career exploration activity where a student works for an employer at a place of business for a set period of time, taking an active role in the day to day operations of the business for the purpose of experiencing first-hand what is entailed in working within the given industry. The student is assigned a worksite supervisor, or may rotate to work under the supervision of several employees at the worksite, while accomplishing the given tasks or projects assigned.

Where can I find internship opportunities in the North Bay?

The North Bay is favored with a number of excellent internship programs serving diverse industries and educational levels. The agencies listed below can help prepare you for your internship and match you to the best available openings.

  • College of Marin — Offers an academic internship program for students of print/production (desktop publishing) and multimedia studies. Contact Lawrence Tjernell at 415-883-2211 x 8228.

  • Dominican University — Offers academic credits to Dominican students interning in employment related to their major field of study. Dominican also posts openings from employers directly on their website.

  • Marin County School-to-Career Partnership — Offers career exploration opportunities for Marin County high school students through internships, job shadows, work site visits and career presentations.

  • Santa Rosa Junior College — Offers an intern program designed for the student who has decided on a major, has taken classes in the major, and is ready for on-the-job experience.

  • Sonoma County School-to-Career Partnership — Offers career exploration opportunities for Sonoma County high school students through internships, job shadows, work site visits and career presentations. Online postings of intern resumes and opportunities.

  • Sonoma State University — Offers an internship program for SSU students awarding credit for work activities in a field related to a student's academic or career goals. Some online postings available.

Will internships help with my career development?

Internships offer you the opportunity to choose an area you are interested in and gain valuable work experience in that field, plus get a first-hand view of an industry to see if it's the right place for you.

Will internships help with coursework?

Internship experience helps you make the connection between the classes you take in school and how they'll apply to your real-world career. You'll be able to see the connection between your school course choices and the skills required to succeed in the workforce. Your school and/or school-to-career partnership can help coordinate your educational and career programs for optimum results.

What types of internships are available?

There are internships for high school students, junior college students, and college students. There are even summer internships for Teachers! A broad range of local industries participates in internship programs.

Do internships pay money?

Most, but not all, internships are paid at rates similar to other typical student job opportunities.

Will I need a resume?

Yes. Creating a good resume is essential to be considered for an internship. Your local internship program (listed above) can help.

Will I need a work permit?

All students between 14 and 18 years old require a work permit for internships and most other employment.
